Before your first visit

New patient questions, answered

What should I bring to the first appointment?
Insurance card, a list of any medications your child takes (including supplements), completed new-patient paperwork, and any prior dental records or x-rays. A favorite stuffed animal or comfort item helps too.
How early should I arrive?
15 minutes before your appointment if you have not completed the new-patient forms in advance, or right on time if you have.
Do I need to be in the room with my child?
For first visits we encourage parents to stay in the operatory. As your child grows comfortable with us, that becomes their choice — but it's always your call.
What insurance do you accept?
Healthy Kids Dental, Delta Dental, MetLife, and most major dental plans. We also offer Tua Pay financing for out-of-pocket costs. Call us to confirm coverage before your visit so there are no surprises.
How long does the first visit take?
Most last 20 to 30 minutes. The dentist completes a full oral exam, counts and inspects the teeth, evaluates jaw growth, and applies fluoride varnish if appropriate. We work at your child's pace.
My child is anxious about the dentist. How do you handle that?
We start every first visit with a tour of the room and a chance for your child to handle the mirror or other safe instruments before we use them. Tell-show-do is our default. For severe anxiety we can discuss nitrous oxide or oral sedation, but most kids do well without it.
Is fluoride varnish safe for my child?
Yes. Topical fluoride varnish is endorsed by the AAPD, AAP, and the United States Preventive Services Task Force for children at risk of caries. It is brushed on the teeth, hardens immediately, and is the same fluoride compound used in toothpaste at a higher concentration.
